Technical Support- How to Select LCD colors
1, TN, HTN LCD Color
The natural positive TN LCD color is black segments on gray background. The color can be yellow tint or blue tint or red tint depending on the cell structure and material used. It will be pretty difficult to produce very white background TN LCD color. 3M developed a film which can generate polar white LCD background color but very expensive.
Positive TN LCD color can be changed using printing or in cell mask technique which can be any colors but the color area is fixed.
Orient Display developed a special technology named FS LCD which can make the segment colors changed but there are limitations:
- Only limited to 7 colors.
- Need to have backlight.
- Pretty expensive because of the backlight.
Negative TN LCD color is white segments on black background. By adjusting the materials and cell structure, the background color can be dark blue or dark red. Negative LCD better works with backlight. The displayed segment will should the backlight color. The good side of negative TN LCD is that the LCD colors can be very vivid. Worked with printed or masked colors, the negative LCDs can show very good quality multi-colors which are usually used in automotive, audio systems etc.
HTN LCD color is a little yellow tint compared with TN LCD. In order to produce gray HTN LCD color, the contrast and viewing angle can be compromised.
2, STN LCD Color
There are several color selections for STN LCD.
- Yellow green STN LCD color: dark blue character with yellow green background
- Gray STN LCD color: blue character with natural gray background
- Blue STN LCD color: white character with blue background
- Positive FSTN LCD color: black character with gray background
- Negative FSTN LCD color: white character with black background
- FFSTN, ESTN, ASTN LCD color: white character with super dark background (high contrast)
The above LCD colors combined with different LED colors can generate a lot beautiful colors. The LED colors normally include: yellow green, white, blue, pure green, amber, orange, red and tricolor. White and tricolor LED can be high in cost, blue is fair and other colors are relatively low cost. The popular LCD and LED color combinations are as follows:
- Yellow green STN LCD+ yellow green LED backlight
- Gray STN LCD + yellow green LED backlight
- Gray STN LCD + white LED backlight
- Blue STN LCD + white LED backlight
- FSTN+White LED backlight
- Negative FSTN, FFSTN, ESTN, ASTN can work with any LED backlights.
- Bad STN LCD+LED backlight color combinations:
- Gray STN+Blue LED Backlight
- Gray STN+tricolor LED Backlight
- Blue STN+Blue LED Backlight
- Blue STN+tricolor LED Backlight
The above passive LCDs can't realize full colors. In order achieve full colors, color filter have to be used in either CSTN LCD or TFT LCD.
CSTN LCD or TFT LCD colors can be designed to be 4-bit (64 colors), 8-bit (256 colors), 16-bit (65,536 colors) and 24-bit (16.7 million colors). True color (or 24-bit color).
